lecektir.
Gyula is situated on the Fehér-Körös River within the Great Hun
garian Plain. Gyula Fortress, which was part of the Habsburg border
fortress system until 1566 and located in the Trans-Tisza region, was
one of the key strongholds for Austria. During the Szigetvár Campaign
of 1566, Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned Gazi Pertev Pasha to
conquer the fortress, which held a strategic position, in order to secure
the Sanjak of Temesvár. The fortress surrendered following a siege las
ting two months. With the loss of the fortress, the Habsburg defense
system was significantly weakened. From this date onward, the fortress
became part of Ottoman Hungary, and the town became an important
sanjak of the Province of Temesvár.
Gyula Fortress fell into Austrian hands in 1695 during the long
years of war that followed the Second Siege of Vienna. Remaining un
der Ottoman rule for 129 years, the fortress was fortified immediately
after the conquest; it was repaired and stocked with ammunition, provi
sions, and soldiers. Situated in the marshes of the Körös River, the for
tress was surrounded by three large suburbs (varoş). The marshy surro
undings of these suburbs provided a significant security advantage.
This study examines the siege and conquest of the fortress, the
post-conquest undertakings, and the repair activities carried out within
the fortress throughout the Ottoman rule. Furthermore, the guards res
ponsible for the security of the fortress and surrounding settlements will
be analyzed under headings such as Janissaries (yeniçeriler), artillerymen
(topçular), cavalrymen (farisler), azabs, beşlüs, and martolos. Based on
payroll registers (mevacib defterleri), the study aims to reveal the guard
strength of the fortress across various years. The importance of the fort
ress and its connection with surrounding fortifications are among the
other topics to be addressed. While the registers and documents in the
Istanbul Ottoman Archives constitute the primary source of this study,
manuscripts, chronicles, travelogues, engravings, plans, as well as local
and foreign literature, will be utilized to support the subject.
