Oguz Yurdu is the novel of Annaguli Nurmemmed, a contemporary
Turkmen novelist. It was originally published in Turkmen in 1999, and it was
translated into Turkish in 2001. Oguz Yurdu is a historical novel which
describes the 11th-century adventures of the Oguz tribes. It narrates the
events in Khorasan and the struggles of the Seljuks. There are two main
characters in the novel, Selguk Bey and Oguz Han. One of the outstanding
features of the novel is that it focuses on the migration and conversion (from
Tengrianism to Islam), two main trends in the 11th-century Turkish history.
The author discusses these two issues from their individual and social aspects
whilst the psychological depth is also taken into consideration.
This article is an attempt to analyse the novel in terms of its setting,
theme and the main characters. I will also focus on the unique characteristics
of the novel.
