Katip Çelebi was born in İstanbul, Ottoman Empire in 1609. Katip
Çelebi was a famous Ottoman scholar, historian and geographer. He was the
fırst Müslim scholar since the 13th century to write about scientifıc
developments outside o f the Islamic world. Katip Çelebi is one o f the most
productive authors o f non-religious scientifıc literatüre in the 17th century
Ottoman Empire. During his short lif etime o f forty eight years, he yvrote
twenty one books about historiography, geography, philosophy, astronomy,
Islamic law, Sufism and literatüre. Katip Çelebi with these works wants to
open the way to a new vitality and modernization in the Ottoman Empire. The
works o f Katip Çelebi, one o f the most prominent thinkers o f the Ottoman
centuries, were translated into Western languages.
Katip Çelebi ’s most complex work is a world geography in Turkish
under the title “Cihanniima It is very important for us that Katip Çelebi in
this book wrote also about the Rumelia's cities like Skopje, Bitola, Stip,
Prilep, Prespa, Debar, Doyran, Ohrid... He successfully describes the cities
and theirs rivers, lakes, climate. His notes are very important and useful for
the geographical and cultural aspects o f 17th century Macedonia. Nowadays
“Cihannüma ” is a very important book to learn about the past situations in
the Macedonian cities. This paper will deal with this matter.
Katip Çelebi died in İstanbul in 1657.
